M23 rebels besieged and took control of the facilities of RTNC, the national channel in Goma, this Monday, January 27, concordant sources report. This siege of the national radio and television station marks a strategic advance for the rebels, who are seeking to establish their domination over the city.
The security situation in Goma, the capital of the province of North Kivu, remains unstable and confused. The city is the scene of intense clashes between the M23 rebels, according to local sources, and the Wazalendo, armed self-defense groups allied with the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC). These fights for control of the city have plunged the inhabitants into psychosis.
Radio Okapi reveals that fighting continues in several areas of Goma, particularly in Majengo and Himbi, and the rebels are trying to advance towards the city center. Despite the resistance of the FARDC and Wazalendo, the M23 forces continue to gain ground, increasing tension in this tourist city, according to sources on the ground. Explosions of heavy and light weapons resonate throughout the city, fueling the anxiety of residents, who remain confined to their homes.
In addition to the armed clashes, scenes of looting have been reported in several areas of Goma, particularly at the Birere market and in front of the DGDA office at the airport.
Tension is also palpable on the border between the DRC and Rwanda, where heavy exchanges of fire have been reported.
