Qatar Airways has restarted its passenger services to Rwanda, nearly three years after its last flight to Kigali International Airport in December 2021, according to a statement released by Rwanda Airports Company (RAC) on June 25.
The airline will now run four flights per week connecting Doha and Kigali, enhancing travel flexibility and access for passengers to and from Rwanda. This renewed operation is expected to boost the number of foreign visitors, providing opportunities for local enterprises, the hospitality sector, and tourism operators.
“We’re delighted to be flying back to Kigali. Our collaboration with RwandAir aims to give travelers expanded choices and improved convenience, especially with the upcoming opening of the new international airport in 2028,” said Yasser Mohamed Ali, Qatar Airways’ Regional Services Manager.
RAC Managing Director Charles Habonimana welcomed the airline back, underlining Kigali’s role as an emerging regional aviation hub.
“We are pleased to welcome you home again and anticipate a fruitful partnership with Qatar Airways as Kigali continues to establish itself as a major East African hub,” he said.
Jules Muheto Ndenga, the CEO of Aviation Travel and Logistics Holding Limited (ATL), said the airline’s return reflects the shared ambitions of President Paul Kagame and the Emir of Qatar.
“This milestone mirrors the vision of our leaders. Together, we’re working on the new airport project and enhancing ties with our national airline. We’re committed to elevating aviation standards in Rwanda,” Ndenga remarked.
Qatar Airways maintains a strategic alliance with RwandAir, including cargo services, under a codeshare agreement signed in 2021.
Since diplomatic ties began in May 2017, Rwanda and Qatar have developed a strong partnership, particularly in aviation and infrastructure development.
