The President of the Rwandan Football Federation (FERWAFA), Munyantwali Alphonse, has stated that the prizes awarded to teams that win trophies are too small.
He made these remarks during an extraordinary general assembly of FERWAFA held on Saturday, May 3, 2025.
This came after the leaders of Rayon Sports and APR FC—who are set to face off in the Peace Cup final scheduled for Sunday—expressed concerns that the rewards given to teams winning such tournaments do not match the revenue generated from these matches.
Addressing this issue, FERWAFA President Munyantwali Alphonse said he agrees with those raising the concern, admitting that the prizes are indeed small and promising that they will be increased.
He said, “We want to increase the prizes, not necessarily to make them too big or too small. Honestly speaking, I also believe they are currently too low. It's a matter of financial capacity, but we believe the prizes will increase in the near future.”
Munyantwali further explained that people often assume large venues generate high revenue, but that's not always the case, as the expenses required to host matches in such venues are also high. Nonetheless, he emphasized that the plan is to increase the prizes for teams that reach and win the finals.
He added, “Big venues are expensive to manage and play in. But setting that aside, the money awarded to teams that win trophies or finish second is still low. We must find a way to increase these prizes going forward. I agree that the current amounts are insufficient, but they are low because we still have limited resources.”
In 2025, FERWAFA plans to operate with a budget of 15.2 billion Rwandan Francs, of which approximately 2.53 billion will be allocated to its operations, including staff salaries.
