The Electoral Commission of Uganda has officially declared Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi, the candidate from the National Unity Platform (NUP), as the newly elected Member of Parliament for Kawempe North. The announcement, made on March 14, 2025, confirms Luyimbazi’s victory in a highly contested by-election.
NRM Rejects Results, Alleges Irregularities
Despite the official declaration, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has rejected the results, citing electoral irregularities and disenfranchisement of over 50,000 voters. According to NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong, some votes from parts of Kawempe North were not considered, and the election process was marred by violence and misconduct.
The NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC), chaired by President Yoweri Museveni, has announced plans to challenge the results in court, arguing that the integrity of the electoral process was compromised.
Legal Battle Looms Over Election Outcome
With the NRM preparing a legal challenge, the election results remain a subject of contention. However, unless overturned by the courts, Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi remains the MP-elect, as per the Electoral Commission’s declaration.
This development adds to the ongoing political tensions in Uganda, where the ruling NRM, in power since 1986, has faced increasing criticism over electoral practices and governance issues.
As the legal process unfolds, the political landscape in Kawempe North and beyond remains uncertain. The final verdict on this by election may have broader implications for Uganda’s political future.
