Tshisekedi Will Not Attend EAC Summit on Congo's Security Issues

The spokesperson for President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, Tina Salama, has announced that the President will not attend the extraordinary summit of East African Community (EAC) heads of state focused on examining the ongoing security challenges in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Kenya's President William Ruto, who chairs the EAC, had previously stated that a meeting involving the heads of state from the East African region was scheduled to take place within the next 48 hours while The Congolese presidency has also confirmed to Jeune Afrique that Félix Tshisekedi will not attend. "Given the current situation, it is clear that the president will not be able to attend this summit," Tina Salama, his spokesperson, told Jeune Afrique

She also mentioned on X (formerly Twitter) that President Tshisekedi convened representatives from various sectors within Congo for a meeting at the headquarters of the African Union on the same day.

In a statement made the day before, President Ruto expressed deep concerns about the ongoing conflict in Eastern Congo, emphasizing that it severely undermines human rights. "The issue of insecurity in Eastern Congo is distressing for the people of the East African Community. Living conditions are deteriorating due to military actions, including the ongoing blockade of Goma," he stated.

Ruto underscored the necessity of adhering to the terms outlined in the Luanda agreements, urging the conflicting parties to engage in dialogue to resolve the situation peacefully
